Workshop Advisory Group

Humanitarian technical workshops support regional stakeholders in the appropriateness and quality of their disaster preparedness and response, involving regional training capacity and partners. This pilot project for South-East Asia is guided by a broad Advisory Group of IASC clusters, UN bodies, IOs, NGOs and donors. The project is facilitated by Shelter Centre and funded by ECHO and DFID.

The workshops project was formally launched at Shelter Meeting 10b on December 2-3 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. A teleconference was set up so that regional organisations based in the South and South-East Asian region could participate in meeting with the Geneva plenary.

84% of the respondents at Shelter Meeting 10b confirmed they would like to be involved with the regional workshops project.
100% of the participants in Bangkok representing international NGOs generally agreed to be part of the Advisory Group.

This meeting marked the establishment of the Advisory Group and its first meeting. The discussions that ensued and and the subsequent feedback provided invaluable support to the development of the project.

Stakeholders from various organisations, including staff from local and national branches of government, national and international NGOs, International Organisations, United Nations bodies, representatives of IASC clusters and donors are invited to collaborate to form an inter-sectoral and inter-stakeholder Advisory Group to guide the technical workshops. Members of the Advisory Group will have the opportunity to

  • nominate people to participate in the workshops
  • ensure that key organisational messages are conveyed
  • review the workshop programme material and content
  • actively develop the contents of the workshops

This inter-sector programme is intended to ensure the broadest recognition at the global level. In order to achieve this, a certificate of accreditation from the Advisory Group will be given to each participant on completion of the ToT workshop programme.

As participants receive their accreditation, they are then qualified to facilitate further humanitarian workshops in the region, building a sustainable franchise of knowledge-sharing.

Second meeting of the Advisory Group - minutes and update

The second Advisory Group meeting took place on the 4th of February 2011, from 14:00-16:00 ICT at the Habitat for Humanity Bangkok headquarters.

A meeting took place simultaneously in Geneva at the Shelter Centre headquarters one hour after the Bangkok meeting begans, from 9:00 – 10:00 CET.

Interested parties unable to attend in person were invited to dial in over the phone or through skype.

The project received strong support from UN agencies, government agencies, donors and regional NGOs during a week-long consultation in Delhi and Bangkok. The comments receieved were presented to the Advisory Group on 4th April, when further feedback was offered. Major points arising from the meeting (which are summarised in the minutes) included:

  • the ToT and workshops should be delivered in May - June to allow for further regional engagement.
  • adjustments to the workshops agenda, to emphasise regional planning on the final day and reduce the time allocated to camps.
  • the need for training to respond to the needs of development workers, who become humanitarian workers following a disaster. This suggests a focus on DRR+Response+Recovery.
  • greater focus on the ToT content and delivery methods.
  • nominations for the ToT and first workshops will open soon.
The workshops team is now in the process of implementing all comments. If you would like to provide further feedback, you can do so via our online feedback form (coming soon). We appreciate all suggestions, and will do our best to ensure the views of all stakeholders are integrated to the programme.
